Discuss your EB-3 goals

01 / The pathway

What is EB-3?

EB-3 is the third preference employment-based immigrant category in the United States. It provides a pathway to lawful permanent residence, commonly called a green card, for eligible skilled workers, professionals, and other workers.

It generally requires a permanent, full-time job offer from a U.S. employer willing to sponsor you. Most cases also require the employer to obtain labor certification from the U.S. Department of Labor before filing an immigrant petition.

The job must be genuine, and you must meet its requirements. A green card depends on petition approval, visa availability, and satisfying the applicable immigration and admissibility requirements.

02 / Eligibility

Three categories. Specific requirements.

Your education, experience, and the requirements of the offered position determine which category may fit.

Skilled workers

Jobs requiring at least two years of training or experience. You must meet the position’s requirements; relevant postsecondary education may count as training. The work must not be temporary or seasonal.

Professionals

Jobs requiring at least a U.S. bachelor’s degree or a foreign equivalent degree. You must hold the qualifying degree; education and experience cannot substitute for the degree requirement in this category.

Other workers

Jobs requiring less than two years of training or experience. You must be able to perform the work and meet the job’s requirements. The position must not be temporary or seasonal.

03 / Your ambition

What are you building toward?

People migrate for different reasons. A sound plan connects your goals with the realities of employment, family life, and settling in a new country.

Your goals. Your next chapter.

A long-term home

Many applicants seek the stability of permanent residence and the ability to build their lives in the United States, while meeting the responsibilities that come with maintaining that status.

Work and professional growth

A genuine sponsoring job can be the foundation for a new chapter. Consider the duties, wages, location, and cost of living carefully as you plan your move.

A future with family

Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 may be eligible to immigrate with you or follow to join, subject to applicable rules and individual eligibility. Education and community are often central to a family’s plans.

The possibility of citizenship

Some permanent residents later choose to apply for U.S. citizenship. Naturalization is a separate process with its own residence, physical presence, and other eligibility requirements.

Understand the road ahead.

  1. Job offer and labor certificationA sponsoring employer offers a qualifying position and, in most cases, completes the required recruitment and labor certification process.
  2. Immigrant petitionThe employer files Form I-140 with USCIS, supported by evidence about the position, your qualifications, and its ability to pay the offered wage.
  3. Visa availabilityYour priority date and applicable visa category and country determine when you may move forward. Visa Bulletin movement can change and may go backward.
  4. Immigrant visa or adjustment of statusWhen eligible, you pursue immigrant visa processing abroad or adjustment of status if eligible within the United States. Required checks, medical examinations, and any interviews form part of this stage.

Timelines vary by case and visa availability. No approval or completion date is guaranteed. For official requirements, see USCIS EB-3 guidance and the U.S. Department of State Visa Bulletin.
